Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common nutrient gaps worldwide, and not all vitamin D supplements are the same. The main choice is between two forms, and the answer is reasonably clear.

D2 versus D3

Both are converted by the body into active vitamin D, but they do not get there the same way or last equally long.

Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is sourced from plants, fungi and fortified foods. It is converted less efficiently, and its effect on blood levels is shorter-lasting.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form produced in human skin from sun exposure, and is also found in animal sources. It more closely matches what your body already makes, and it raises and sustains vitamin D levels more effectively over time.

That difference is why most modern formulations, including ours, are built around D3.

What vitamin D3 supports

Vitamin D3 is involved in several interconnected systems. It is commonly associated with supporting healthy bone density and structure, normal immune function, muscle function, and general vitality.

Why K2 is often added

This is the part most vitamin D supplements leave out.

D3's main job is increasing how much calcium your body absorbs. But absorption is only half the process — the calcium then needs directing.

Vitamin K2 activates proteins including osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein, which are involved in binding calcium into bone and regulating its deposition in soft tissue. D3 opens the door for calcium. K2 is involved in where it goes from there.

The two are described as working together because they support different, complementary steps of the same biological process.

What the research shows

Research consistently shows D3 is more effective than D2 at raising and maintaining vitamin D status. That is the best-established comparison here.

A growing body of work has examined the combined role of D3 and K2 in calcium handling, particularly how K2 influences calcium-binding proteins. Individual needs vary, and supplements are not a substitute for medical care — but it is part of why combination formulas have become common.

Choosing a D3 + K2 supplement

D3 potency. Look for a clearly labelled dose rather than a trace amount. And check it against the 4,000 IU adult upper intake level — ours provides 5000 IU, which is above it, and worth discussing with your doctor.

K2 form. MK-7 is generally preferred over MK-4 for its longer half-life.

Softgel over tablet. Both vitamins are fat-soluble, so a softgel suspended in oil supports absorption better than a dry tablet.
